Working with young people

Why work with young people?

In the aftermath of the impact to both the UK and European economy from the effects of Covid-19 and Brexit, two hard hitting reports published by UK Youth “The impact of COVID-19 on young people & the youth sector “ [2020] and a report by the Prince’s Trust “NEET Solution” [2018], have indicated that approximately 1,000,000 young people are not building themselves a secure future in the UK alone.

The reports warned that the economic and mental health costs to the nation could be in the billions of pounds.

Getting teen and young people active!

At Quaystage Training we provide specialist training courses and programmes for young people to encourage them to:

  • get active, .
  • enjoy social interaction
  • stimulate and develop important life skills for the future.

Hard hitting statistics

The Prince's Trust report “Towards a NEET Solution,” sets out the following facts that concern the welfare of young people.

  • Over 1,000,000 young people are not building a secure future for themselves
  • Economic costs to the nation to be in the billions
  • Over 115,000  18-19 years old's not in employment, education or training (NEETs)
  • The UK was ranked 23rd in a league of 28 western countries for the proportion of 18-20 years olds not in employment, education, or training
  • 65% of all young people between the ages of 16-25 in the UK felt that their lives had no purpose, were meaningless or not worth living; many suffering from depression due to the pressures they face to sustain education, obtain qualifications and establish a career.

Welfare concerns

Members of UK Youth Voice [May 2020] highlighted some of the concerns young people have for the future, such as the long-term effects of isolation on wellbeing and mental health, and uncertainty about employment. Feedback from the UK Youth Movement predicts that the impact on young people will include the following:

  • Increased mental health or wellbeing concerns, including loneliness and isolation
  • Lack of safe space and challenging family relationships, as well as lack of trusted relationships or someone to turn to
  • Increased social media or online pressure with increased risk of racial and sexual exploitation or grooming
  • Higher risk for engaging in gangs, substance misuse, carrying weapons or other harmful practices.

Cost to young people

Young people face a ‘revolving door’ of unemployment or low paid jobs with poor security and run a greater risk of becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.

These are the reasons why we need to work with young people to enhance their personal and professional development.

Quaystage's aims

We believe that, when you reach out to a young person’s imagination and stimulate their confidence, you can influence their future.

In an age of video consoles and internet overdose, our programmes for young people are a genuinely healthy, positive and life-changing experience, where they can discover hidden strengths, learn new skills and increase their employability.

Adventure sail training has a proven record of considerable success in developing character and ability of young men and women, and readying them for the challenges of life.

Quaystage Training's sail programmes and courses are adventure activities for people of all ages and abilities. They include instruction in all aspects of sailing and diving, but their purpose goes far, far beyond this.

The courses use the experience of being at sea principally as a means to help those on board learn about themselves, discover hidden strengths and talents, and to understand the value of working as a team. Some programmes form the setting for much wider aspects of education at sea.

Quaystage Training is leading NEET solutions

Our water-based outdoor activities are training opportunities which have been designed to:

  • increase confidence
  • re-establish self-belief and wellbeing
  • enhance life and employment skills

By participating in Sail Camps and Education@Sea Programmes, a young person will not just have the time of their life, but also gain newly discovered life skills and a huge sense of achievement. They will  grow in confidence, gain self-discipline and self-awareness, as well as develop their leadership and communication skills.  At the same time, young people will be able to gain qualifications and certificates which support vocational and extra-curriculum learning, enhancing their CV and ultimate employability.

Educational experience

Through our Education@Sea programme full encouragement is given to young people to engage in learning about their natural environment. Subjects such as Marine Biology, Science, Design and Geography are among the many that can be delivered on board.

As part of mixed gender groups with 8-28 young people, a young person will enjoy the unique hands on experience of crewing and living on board our sailing vessels.

Whilst on board, young people will learn and establish an understanding of community and friendship in a non-contrived environment, which encourages teamwork, develops their social skills, as well as their own self-belief and awareness.

Encouraging young people to help themselves:

While participating in our Sail Camps, young people:

  • learn to take on responsibility
  • have the opportunity to develop socially and gain the understanding of teamwork and leadership
  • learn in the natural environment, gaining enhancements to qualifications and their personal CV

Our programmes set out to encourage young people to seek further training and qualifications by providing contact time both prior and post the activity.

ScienceBlue

Science@Sea is included in all our Summer Sail Camp programmes.  It aims to introduce elements of marine science.  The aim is to stimulate awareness of the importance of marine biodiversity and echo systems to climate change and human settlement.  Through conducting simple experiments performed on the yachts by the young people we are able to conduct a health check of our waters and also stimulate understanding, debate and learning.
