Young people face a ‘revolving door’ of unemployment or low paid jobs with poor security and run a greater risk of becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.
These are the reasons why we need to work with young people to enhance their personal and professional development.
Adventure Sail training has a proven record of considerable success in developing character and ability of young men and women and readying them for the challenges of life.
Quaystage Training's Sail programmes and courses are adventure activities for people of all ages and abilities. They include instruction in all aspects of sailing and diving but their purpose goes far, far beyond this. The courses use the experience of being at sea principally as a means to help those on board learn about themselves, discover hidden strengths and talents and to understand the value of working as a team. Some programmes form the setting for much wider aspects of education at sea.
With the popularity of sailing at the 2012 London Olympics and the legacy created by the games, sailing is an ideal activity to use as a platform to inspire and help young people to get active during a key stage in their developmental years.
Full encouragement will be given to young people to engage in learning about their natural environment. Subjects such as marine biology, the sciences and geography, are among the many that can be delivered on board.
As part of mixed gender teams with between 8-28 young people, a young person will enjoy the unique hands on experience of crewing and living on board our sailing vessels.
Whilst on board, young people will learn and establish an understanding of community and friendship in a non-contrived environment which encourages teamwork, develops their social skills and their own self-belief and awareness.
By participating in Sail Camp a young person will not just have the time of their life but also gain newly discovered life skills and a huge sense of achievement. They will grow in confidence, gain self-discipline and self-awareness as well as develop their leadership and communication skills.
At the same time young people will be able to gain qualifications and certificates which support vocational and extra-curriculum learning enhancing their CV and ultimate employability.
At Quaystage we try to keep the cost of the experience down so that it is accessible to all young people from all social backgrounds.
