Why Work with Young People?

At Quaystage Training we provide specialist training courses and programmes for young people, to encourage them to get active and stimulate developing important life skills for the future.

We believe that when you reach out to a young person’s imagination and stimulate their confidence that you can influence their future.

In an age of video consoles and Internet overdose,  our programmes for young people are a genuinely healthy, positive and life-changing experience where they discover hidden strengths and learn new skills and increase their employability.

Hard hitting statistics

The Prince Trust report “Towards a NEET Solution,” sets out the following facts that concern the welfare of young people.

  • FACT:   Over 1,000,000 young people are not building a secure future for themselves.
  • FACT:   Economic cost to the nation to be in the billions.
  • FACT:  Over 115,000  18-19 years olds not in employment, education or training (NEETs).

  • FACT :   65% of all young people between the ages of 16-25 in the UK felt that their lives had no purpose, were meaningless or not worth living, many suffering depression from the pressures they face to sustain education, obtain qualifications and establish a career.

Cost to young people

Young people face a ‘revolving door’ of unemployment or low paid jobs with poor security and run a greater risk of becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.

These are the reasons why we need to work with young people to enhance their personal and professional development.

Quaystage's training aims

Adventure Sail training has a proven record of considerable success in developing character and ability of young men and women and readying them for the challenges of life.

Quaystage Training's Sail programmes and courses are adventure activities for people of all ages and abilities. They include instruction in all aspects of sailing and diving but their purpose goes far, far beyond this. The courses use the experience of being at sea principally as a means to help those on board learn about themselves, discover hidden strengths and talents and to understand the value of working as a team. Some programmes form the setting for much wider aspects of education at sea.

With the popularity of sailing at the 2012 London Olympics and the legacy created by the games, sailing is an ideal activity to use as a platform to inspire and help young people to get active during a key stage in their developmental years.

Educational experience

Full encouragement will be given to young people to engage in learning about their natural environment.  Subjects such as marine biology, the sciences and geography, are among the many that can be delivered on board.

As part of mixed gender teams with between 8-28 young people, a young person will enjoy the unique hands on experience of crewing and living on board our sailing vessels.

Whilst on board, young people will learn and establish an understanding of community and friendship in a non-contrived environment which encourages teamwork, develops their social skills and their own self-belief and awareness.

By participating in Sail Camp a young person will not just have the time of their life but also gain newly discovered life skills and a huge sense of achievement. They will  grow in confidence, gain self-discipline and self-awareness as well as develop their leadership and communication skills.

At the same time young people will be able to gain qualifications and certificates which support vocational and extra-curriculum learning enhancing their CV and ultimate employability.
