Important information for practical courses

Arrival Time:

For courses starting on a Saturday morning, Friday is our “meet and greet night” giving you a chance to meet your Skipper and the rest of the crew. For courses starting on a Monday you can come down on a Sunday evening. Most of our RYA Practical courses start from Hamble Point Marina in Hampshire.  This will be confirmed at time of booking and how to find the yacht will also form part of your joining instructions

"Meet and greet" starts at 1900.

Mess Accommodation:

You will be accommodated on board your yacht for the whole course.

We provide pillows and pillowcases but you will need to bring your own sleeping bags and towels. During the course you will visit different ports, harbours and marinas in and around the Solent

You can expect to spend at least one night on a buoy or at anchor and may not have access to shore power every night.

You may find it useful to bring a 12 volt charger for charging phones.

CabinAll our yachts sleep at least 8 people in 3 or 4 double cabins, although there will never be this number on board for a RYA training course. Occasionally you may be expected to share a cabin or saloon with another student of the same sex.

Course Price Includes:

  • Berthing fees and fuel
  • Evening meals provided during 5 day practical course
  • Accommodation on board the yacht on all practical courses

Meals:

For 5 day practical courses you will receive three meals a day. Please bring your own favourite treats or shop for them when we go ashore as we cannot cater for everyone’s tastes, although we do try very hard!

A typical menu for the week might be:

  • Breakfast - bacon sandwiches / choice of cereals / toast and marmalade
  • Lunch - hot pasties and soup / sandwiches / salad and quiche
  • Supper - spaghetti bolognaise / curry / chilli con carne / bankers and mash

For 9 day courses your evening meal will be provided during the practical aspect of the course.

Cooking on board is all part of the experience! On weekend courses you will purchase your own evening meal ashore.

Insurance:

We recommend that you take out insurance to cover you in the event of any accident or injury during the course or in the event of you making a cancellation. If you do not have your own insurance Topsail Insurance may be able to help you with this.
